Chapter Twenty-One

THE DAY HAD GONE faster than any Jade could remember. Between making sure Tegan was behaving and keeping up with the kids, there was little time to spare. She did her best to make sure Tegan and the children got to spend time together. She had them all draw pictures in Tegan’s room and spent time with them, putting together giant floor puzzles while Tegan watched. When it was time for bed, Jade read to them in Tegan’s room.

The kids wanted to sleep in Tegan’s room again. Rather than just say no, Jade made a deal and let them sleep in their new sleeping bags on top of their beds. With everyone else settled, Jade went to load the dishwasher and wipe down the surfaces. The little ones had done a good job of picking up their toys. Jade was happy they’d helped and collected the ones they missed.

She couldn’t help but spend a few minutes staring at each of them when she peeked through their doors. They were so angelic when asleep. Jade had to admit, these three were pretty good, even when they were awake. They entertained her constantly with the way their minds worked. She’d found herself surprised at how much she enjoyed just being around them.

She wandered through Tegan’s doorway. “You ready for a shower?”

“You’ve been busy all day. Just relax for the night. I’m fine.”

“I’m all good. I know I need a shower, and I imagine you’ll feel far more relaxed and refreshed if you can have one too. Should I find you a fresh t-shirt?”

“I thought I was stubborn, but you outdo me.” Shaking her head, Tegan pointed to her drawers. “Bottom drawer, left-hand side, at the back.”

Jade located a mint-green one, with a cute bear on the front. Beside it, something caught her eye. The white-laced, cotton nightie looked like it was out of Little House on the Prairie.

“The bear’s cute, but I think this one’s elegant. Right about now, I’m guessing you’re probably due a pick me up. Let’s go with the white for tonight.”

Jade waited for confirmation. When it came in the form of a nod, she returned the mint-green night shirt to the drawer. She went into the bathroom and got a fresh towel from a rack above the bath. She laid the towel at the end of the bathroom cabinet, nearest the shower, and the nightie at the other end.

Between them, they’d managed to perfect the art of getting Tegan in and out of bed relatively painlessly. Now that she had Tegan in the bathroom, Jade turned the shower on to warm up. “How warm do you like the temperature? I didn’t even think to ask last night.”

“Pretty hot. How you had the temperature last night was good.”

Jade adjusted the dial. “Maybe just check before you get under the water.” Jade stepped back from the shower entrance. “I know you’re not going to be happy, but I’m still not leaving you alone.”

“I’ll be fine,” Tegan rolled her eyes.

“You can argue all you want, but it won’t make a bit of difference.
